It was nice that things were making more sense, but it would have been even better to find himself in a reality that made some. At the hospital, Nelson parked and they went in and up together. Thankfully it wasnât the ER this time, and Greg had to think what an improvement that was. Was it bad when he considered ICU a step in the right direction?
In the ICU waiting room, they found Paige, Lauren, Wes, and the girl from before that Greg remembered but had no real place for. The greetings went around the circle with Paigeâs hug being a good bit longer than the others when she got to him. Backing up from him, she lifted his hair up and touched his forehead and then his eye as he closed it, trying not to wince.
Her gaze at him held worry and quiet acceptance. âGood to see you still in one piece.â
Greg let out a breath at that. âDidnât really feel like playing Humpty Dumpty forever.â
She smiled and hugged him again gently before backing up and tugging him over to a chair. âCome on. You need to sit.â
He did because he didnât want to argue and because he felt like heâd just run a marathon. The others all came and sat around too.
Glancing at the girl, who smiled at him, Greg wondered how she fit into this whole crazy mess. He was one breath away from asking, but he didnât get it out in time.
âSo how is Taylor?â Nelson asked, and the worry never left his face or voice.
âA little better maybe,â Paige said, leaning into his arms. âI got to go in a little while ago. I mean, sheâs not really awake yet or ready to go dancing or anything, but⦠better.â
Dancing. Something about that word doubled Greg over slightly. How could so much have changed so fast? He hadnât been nearly grateful enough for dancing with her at the wedding. He hadnât been nearly grateful enough for any of it.
Nelson glanced over at him. âYou think theyâll let any of us back?â
âI donât know. Maybe. Iâll have to talk to Mom and Dad when they get back from visiting and see.â
They all nodded, but the seriousness of the situation had sapped their normal easy comradery. Greg wondered if they would ever find it back. It was hard to think they would.
